Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway: Route, Speed and Travel Time

The Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway is a 109 km, four-lane, access-controlled greenfield road built by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to link Ahmedabad with the Dholera Special Investment Region. It is designed for a 120 km/h speed and is built so it can be widened to eight lanes later. It was reported inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 31 March 2026 and is operational, and it is the single change that most reshaped how quickly Dholera can be reached from the city.

What the expressway is

This is a purpose-built, access-controlled expressway, meaning entry and exit happen only at defined interchanges rather than at every crossing, which is what allows consistent high speeds. It runs 109 km as a greenfield alignment, that is, on a fresh route rather than by widening an existing road. It opened with four lanes and was engineered so it can expand to eight lanes as traffic grows. NHAI is the delivering agency.

How much travel time it saves

Before the expressway, the Ahmedabad-to-Dholera trip on mixed roads took roughly two to two and a quarter hours. Reported figures put the new drive at about 40 minutes to about one hour. Sources vary on the exact number, so the honest way to read it is as a band rather than a single guaranteed figure, and real journey time will always depend on your start point, traffic and the day. Design speed and safety features

The 120 km/h design speed is a road-engineering standard, not a legal limit for drivers, and posted limits and rules apply as signed. Access control is the defining safety and speed feature: because there are no uncontrolled crossings or ribbon development along the carriageway, traffic flows without the constant braking that slows an ordinary highway. The expandability to eight lanes is a planning hedge so the corridor can absorb the growth that Dholera is meant to generate.

What it cost

Two cost figures circulate, and the gap between them is about scope, not disagreement. Construction-only cost is reported at about Rs 3,196 crore. Including land, the figure rises to about Rs 4,373 crore. Both are reported values, so we present them side by side rather than blending them into one headline number.

Tolling

The expressway is tolled and uses FASTag, India's electronic toll-collection system, so a working FASTag on the windscreen is the practical requirement for a smooth run. Specific toll rates are not reliably sourced, so Dholerapedia does not publish a per-trip figure. Connectivity is the clearest real-world progress in Dholera so far, and the expressway is the centrepiece.
