Dholera's headline rail project is a proposed Ahmedabad (Sarkhej) to Dholera semi-high-speed passenger line, reportedly cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs around 13 May 2026 at about Rs 20,667 crore for a roughly 134 km double line, targeting completion around 2030-31 and a journey of about 45 minutes. A separately cited 220 km/h speed is single-sourced and questionable for a semi-high-speed line, so we flag it rather than assert it. A Bhimnath-Dholera freight line has been proposed under the industrial corridor since about 2013 but is long-pending with no current timeline. A direct Western DFC spur into Dholera is not reliably sourced.
Dholera's main rail project is a proposed semi-high-speed passenger line from Ahmedabad, at Sarkhej, to the Dholera Special Investment Region. It was reportedly cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) around 13 May 2026 at about Rs 20,667 crore, for a roughly 134 km double line, with a target of about 2030-31 and a reported journey time of about 45 minutes. That is the headline. Beyond it, a long-pending freight line and an unconfirmed corridor link fill out the picture, and this page keeps the confirmed, the pending and the unverified strictly separate.
Dholerapedia is independent and neutral. Rail dates here are targets, not achievements, and one widely repeated speed figure does not hold up to scrutiny, so we flag it rather than print it as fact.
The Sarkhej-Dholera semi-high-speed line
This is the project that matters most for passengers. The reported details are a clearance by the CCEA around 13 May 2026, a cost of about Rs 20,667 crore, a length of about 134 km as a double line, a target completion around 2030-31, and a journey time of about 45 minutes between the Ahmedabad end and Dholera. All of these are reported or target figures from May 2026, so they should be read as a funded intention on a multi-year horizon rather than a service you can board today.
The reason to be careful with the speed number is not pedantry. Semi-high-speed rail in India generally denotes services well below true high-speed thresholds, so a 220 km/h claim alongside that label is internally inconsistent and appears in only one place. We report the cost, length, target year and journey time because they are consistently cited, and we hold back the top-speed figure until a primary source such as an official release confirms it.
How it compares with the road
If built to target, the rail line would give Dholera a second fast link alongside the already-open Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway. The reported roughly 45-minute train time is broadly comparable to the reported expressway drive of about 40 minutes to about one hour, so the value of the rail line is redundancy and mass capacity rather than raw speed advantage. For the full journey-time context see Ahmedabad to Dholera distance.
| Link | Status (mid-2026) | Reported time / note |
|---|---|---|
| Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway | Open | ~40 min to ~1 hr drive |
| Sarkhej-Dholera semi-high-speed rail | Reported approved, early stage | ~45 min, target ~2030-31 |
| Bhimnath-Dholera freight line | Long-pending | Proposed ~2013, no current timeline |
| Western DFC direct spur | Not confirmed | Not reliably sourced |

The Bhimnath-Dholera freight line
Separate from the passenger project is a proposed Bhimnath-Dholera freight line, floated under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor programme around 2013. It is long-pending and has no current published timeline. It belongs in any honest account of Dholera's rail picture because it is real as a proposal, but it should not be counted as progress. Freight rail matters for an industrial region because it moves goods for anchors like the Tata semiconductor fab, but a decade-old proposal without a date is exactly that.
Western DFC and other links
Dholera sits within the influence zone of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, which is anchored on the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (Western DFC). A direct dedicated spur from the Western DFC into Dholera, however, is not reliably sourced. The region benefiting from proximity to the corridor is one thing; a confirmed dedicated connection is another, and we do not claim the latter.
How this fits with the metro plan
There is also an older Ahmedabad-to-Dholera MRTS, or metro-style, proposal. Its current status is unclear and it likely overlaps with, or has been superseded by, the 2026 semi-high-speed line. We cover that thread separately in Dholera metro and MRTS, and readers weighing the region overall may want our neutral is Dholera safe to invest page, which treats every unfinished link with the same caution.
